Hotels in South Devon by the Sea

I book a weekend getaway each year to help beat the January Blues. The Cliffden Hotel Devon is situated on the Teignmouth seafront, offering stunning views of the sea and easy access to the beach (using the back gate). The hotel’s prime location makes exploring the town centre, local cafes, pubs and restaurants easy. With so many hotels in South Devon by the sea, you’ll be glad to choose this gem.

Dog Friendly Accommodation in Teignmouth

If your dog loves a holiday as much as you do, this hotel is a dream come true. The Cliffden Hotel is not just dog-friendly; it’s dog-welcoming. If you book directly, there’s no extra charge for dogs. However, I had a Secret Deal on booking.com, so I had to pay the £10 per night pet charge (which was still cheaper than booking directly).

The bedroom was comfortable, with a king-size bed, bedside cabinets, a chair, a desk with the TV and welcome tray, and a large wardrobe. There was room for Ivan’s bed and a bit of space where he could eat and place his water bowl. Regular readers will know Ivan is a bit nervous, especially in new surroundings. He absolutely loved exploring the room. We turned the heating off, but the room did get very warm, so he liked to lay on the bathroom floor.

Our bedroom was on the ground floor, making it easy to access the grounds for a toilet break. However, as it is an old building, we could hear other guests moving around upstairs. (And they were early risers!) If you’re a poor sleeper, it may be worth asking if you can sleep on the top floor.

The only negative we had was the view from our bedroom. We looked at four bright red bins rather than the grounds or a sea view. Outside our room was also the access for deliveries, so we could not open our curtains fully each morning as people passed regularly.

Cliffden Bedroom Facilities

The Standard Room at Cliffden Hotel has a range of thoughtful features. Here’s what was included:

  1. Bedding: A large, comfortable king-size bed with soft linens, a chair and a desk.
  2. Decor: The room could do with some modernisation, but it was entirely in keeping with the building. However, it was clean.
  3. Tea and Coffee Facilities: A kettle with English breakfast tea and coffee to enjoy during your stay. It was just missing the biscuits!
  4. Bathroom: A clean, en-suite bathroom with complimentary Dove toiletries, fluffy towels, and a shower. Our bathroom could have done with some TLC, as there was some mould in the shower, the grouting was off-colour, and the flooring was old.
  5. Ample Storage: There was a considerable wardrobe where you could hang up winter coats, long dresses and the rest of your clothes. Plus, a space for your luggage. The spare pillows, a fan and an electric heater were also in there.

Gorgeous Grounds

The grounds are extensive, with 7 acres to explore. The hotel team asks that you keep dogs on the lead in the gardens, but dogs can live their best lives running around in a fenced free-run area. We absolutely loved this! Ivan was able to have a quick run, zooming around and burning off some pent-up energy before breakfast.

Don’t Get Caught Short 💩

Tuff Pets Dog Poop Bags are premium, extra thick, and environmentally friendly, providing a reliable and eco-conscious solution for pet waste. These zero-waste, home-compostable poo bags allow pet owners to care for their pets and the planet simultaneously, making walkies so much easier.

Though we didn’t need it during our visit, there is a dedicated dog grooming room where you can clean off muddy or sandy paws or dry them before returning to your bedroom or having a quick drink in the bar.

Cliffden Hotel Restaurant

Dogs were welcome in the breakfast room, as we were asked not to leave Ivan unattended in our room. The buffet was simple, with sausages, bacon, (powdered) scrambled eggs, baked beans, and grilled tomatoes. There was also cereal, toast, yoghurt, fruit, a tea selection, and a coffee machine.

My personal niggles were that the sausage and bread quality could have been improved, and I would have liked mushrooms. A note on the table said to request poached or fried eggs with the team. I did this on day one but was told they weren’t available. I didn’t ask again, but was annoyed on our last morning – when nearly finished – another guest got her poached eggs.

The Cliffden Hotel Teignmouth Menu offers a small selection of sandwiches, soup, and pizza. Devon cream tea or afternoon tea is also available when pre-booked.

Hotels with Pools in Devon

One of the standout features here is the heated indoor pool. Yes, you heard that right! Among Devon hotels with indoor pools, the Cliffden Hotel is a standout. It’s perfect for a relaxing dip after a day of exploring. You collect a towel and keycard from Reception to access the pool. Don’t forget your shower gel, as none is provided. I had to shower back in my room.

It isn’t very deep, 0.7m on one end (I could sit on the floor with my head and shoulders above the water) and 1.3m on the other. This does mean that you’ll have to do a breaststroke to avoid hitting your hands on the floor, but I was lucky to have the pool all to myself.

Cliffden Hotel History

Once a private home, this historic property has welcomed guests for decades. When speaking to some locals in the pub, we were informed that the Cliffden Hotel was a hotel for the blind. After some investigation, the hotel was owned by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. It became a popular destination for visually impaired guests. This was evident to me with brail on signs around the hotel and on our bedroom door.

Cliffden Hotel Prices

When it comes to value, they are competitive. With their prime location, excellent facilities, and dog-friendly focus, you’ll feel like you’ve snagged a great deal. Prices vary per night, but for your information, we paid £165 for a bed and breakfast for a three-night break in January 2025.

So, pack your bags (and your pup’s favourite toy) and head to the Cliffden Hotel Teignmouth for a seaside escape you won’t forget!
