Fortunately, the surrounding areas boast several dog-friendly beaches in this guide where you and your four-legged friend can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf.
We know our furry friends love the beach. Whether they want to feel the sand between their toes or splash about in the waves, there are plenty of dog friendly beaches near Cardiff. Some also have seasonal bans, which have been noted for you.

Dog Friendly Beaches Cardiff
Does Cardiff have a beach? Expect something other than golden sands and fresh sea air at Cardiff’s secret beach. The Foreshore or Splott Beach is near Rover Way, though you wouldn’t know it is there from driving past. The Cardiff beach is littered with rubble, bricks, concrete, twisted metal and old tyres, all remnants of the docks’ past. However, amusingly, the Cardiff Wales beach is marked up on Google Maps as a “beach resort”.

Dog Friendly Beaches in Penarth
Penarth is the closest beach to Cardiff. The beach near the Pier is primarily pebbles. You can enjoy views across the Bristol Channel towards Clevedon and Weston-Super-Mare. The islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm are visible too. The pebble beach and promenade provide a picturesque setting for a seaside walk along the prom and cliffs with your canine companion.
Parking: Car parking bays are opposite the Pier and on the roadside on Cliff Hill. However, it can get busy. There’s also a free car park on Cliff Parade. Sat Nav: CF64 5BP.

Lavernock Point
The mixture of rocks attracts fossil hunters at Lavernock Point, the nearest beach to Cardiff. There is also a coastal path offering views across the Bristol Channel. The most popular point of Lavernock Point is the nature reserve, where butterflies have been observed and recorded by the reserve’s warden for over twenty years, and more than twenty-five species have been identified.
Parking: Fort Road, CF64 5UL. Free parking. It is a small car park and can get full quickly on weekends and during the school holidays.

Thanks to Gavin and Stacey, the Vale of Glamorgan Beaches have become the most famous beaches in South Wales UK. However, there are several beaches to explore.
Barry Island
Did you know Barry Island is actually called Whitmore Bay? It is a golden sandy beach sandwiched between two limestone headlands. Along Barry Island’s seafront are amusement arcades, crazy golf, and fairground rides in the famous Pleasure Park. Of course, there are seaside treats like fish and chips, ice cream and warm doughnuts. It is an ideal spot for a day out with your furry friend.
Parking: Harbour Road, CF62 5HA. Pay and display car parking from £1.10 to £6.50. Coastal parking permits are available for 6 or 12 months.

Jacksons Bay Barry Island
Jackson’s Bay is a pleasant sandy cove with cliffs and plenty of greenery. The long beach slopes gently into the sea. A harbour wall lies east of the beach, at the end of which is a small lighthouse, although there is no access to the harbour wall. The soft, golden sand is just the right consistency for building sandcastles, meaning the beach is popular with families. The beach is used by kayakers too. In addition, the Wales Coastal Path passes through this area.
Parking: Harbour Road, CF62 5HA. Pay and display car parking from £1.10 to £6.50. Coastal parking permits are available for 6 or 12 months. It is about a 5 minute walk from the car park. Head towards CF62 5TU.

Cold Knap
Cold Knap Beach is a long stretch of pebbles, although some sand is revealed when the tide is out. The beach at Cold Knap is located around a mile from the main beach at Barry. As a result, it is always quieter, although it still gets busy in the summer. The nearby Knap Gardens are also dog friendly all year round. There is a lake with ducks and swans and flower-filled borders.

Watch House Bay
Watch House Bay, also known as Watch Tower Bay, is one of the quieter South Wales beaches. It is also known as Little Island Bay. The old watch house, which can still be seen on the beach, was built in the 1860s to look over the old harbour and remind visitors of the area’s nautical past. However, at high tide, the pebble beach here is flanked by rocks on one side and low-rise cliffs with dense trees on the other. When the tide recedes, a vast expanse of sand is exposed. There is a slipway and a small jetty leading down to the water.
Parking: Knap Car Terrace, CF62 6FF. Free parking. The beach is a 10-minute walk from The Knap Car Park.

Fontygary Bay
The beach at Fontygary is mainly made up of pebbles, backed by cliffs, giving a striking backdrop to the beach. It is popular for swimming during the summer months as it backs onto a caravan park. Access the beach via Aberthaw Nature Reserve, where you’ll find the parking.

Limpet Bay
Limpert Bay, also known as Aberthaw Beach, is close to Cardiff Airport and overlooked by the Aberthaw Power Station, where two sizeable cooling water outlets enter the sea. The wide bay has a shingle and rock beach; sand and mud are exposed when the tide is out. But from the beach, there are views over the Bristol Channel towards Minehead and Exmoor. The beach is a good spot for fishing.
Parking: The car park is known as Aberthaw Beach Car Park, CG62 4ZW. The postcode doesn’t take you directly to the car park; follow the signs.

St Mary’s Well Bay
Nestling between Sully Island and Lavernock Point, St Mary’s Well Bay has steep cliffs at one end and dense trees at the other. The terrain is a mixture of sand, pebbles and rocks. However, a large area of mud and wet sand is exposed at low tide with seaweed-covered stones. The beach has views over the Bristol Channel towards Avon and Somerset. Flat Holm is also visible from the beach, a limestone island in Wales’s southernmost point. Steep Holm, the island behind it, is technically in England.
Parking: There is parking at Seashore Grill and The Captain’s Wife, CF64 5UG. Parking is pay and display; if you go into the pub, you can produce the voucher to get what you’ve paid off food and drink. The pub is dog friendly.

Llantwit Major is a picturesque coastal town in the Vale of Glamorgan. It boasts stunning dog-friendly beaches catering to four-legged companions and their owners. Most importantly, there is a café selling food, drink and souvenirs, with a separate toilet block.

Nash Point
With a large bedrock beach full of fossils and fertile rock pools, stunning rugged cliffs and rock formations, all topped off with the majestic Nash Point Lighthouse. It is a popular location for ramblers and hiking along the cliffs to Llantwit Major Beach. The lighthouse and its meadow are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with rare plants and wildlife.

Tresilian Bay
Tresilian Bay is known for its limestone cliffs and stunning scenery. This rock and shingle beach is in a cove underneath the chalk cliffs. Located at the rear of the beach is the distinctive Tresilian House, a large, white farmhouse at the end of a small valley. This coastal area is popular for walking, and a coastal path passes the beach and continues along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

Temple Bay, St Brides Major
Temple Bay is a small cove that sits in Dunraven Bay, just around Witch’s Point from the larger Southerndown beach. The beach here is a narrow stretch of sand between rocky ledges. The top of the cliffs at Witches Point provides excellent views across the bay and is also the site of the ruins of Dunraven Castle, a manor house mostly demolished in the 1960s. There are also the remains of an Iron Age hillfort towards the end of the point. However, access to the beach is challenging, with a steep path and steps leading down to the beach.

Newton Bay
Also known as Black Rock Beach, Newton Beach is in Porthcawl. A long sand and rock beach is backed by the extensive and scientifically interesting Newton Burrows and the Merthyr Mawr sand dunes. Above all, it is for walking, horse riding, windsurfing and kitesurfing. You can walk here to the river mouth at Ogmore or Merthyr Mawr.
Parking: Beach Road, Porthcawl, CF36 5NE. Parking is £1 for an hour, £2 for 2 hours and £4 for all day. The car park has number plate recognition.

Rest Bay
Rest Bay is a Blue Flag Beach with a vast expanse of golden sands where dogs can frolic freely. It sits alongside The Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, so you can expect to find some lost balls. The waves can be large, making it a good beach for surfing, wind and kite surfing. Fishing, bathing and canoeing are also popular pastimes here. Rest Bay is also home to rock pools where marine life can be found. You can even stretch your legs along the Wales Coast Path. The boardwalk path leads to Pink Bay and Kenfig Nature Reserve.
Parking: CF36 3UP. There are seasonal car parking charges. Between October and March, the car park is open between 8am and 6pm, with a flat fee of £1. Sandy Bay, also known as Coney Beach, is a wide, sandy, and gently sloping beach. The beach is wide, but several hundred meters of sand can separate the surf and the promenade behind the beach at low tide. It is a popular spot for surfing and swimming and is backed by an amusement arcade. After that, to the west of the beach is the Eastern Promenade, leading down to the harbour and lighthouse, with views out over the bay. Sandy Bay welcomes four-legged friends with open arms, providing a more sheltered spot for dogs to dig their paws into the soft sands.

Trecco Bay Beach is a large, sandy beach that has been awarded a Blue Flag for its excellent water quality. In other words, it’s great for families looking to paddle or swim. Port Eynon is one of the Gower’s most beautiful beaches, with golden sand, calm, shallow water and dramatic limestone cliffs. If you’re visiting with a dog, Port Eynon is a fantastic choice. Outside the summer season, dogs can enjoy the entire beach, while from 1 May to 30 September they’re still welcome on the western section of the beach, giving them plenty of space to run, play and splash in the waves.

Barafundle Bay, Pembrokeshire

Coast National Park, Pembrokeshire
Stretching along the Pembrokeshire coastline in West Wales, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and their canine companions.
