When searching for hotels in Fowey, it’s hard to miss Harbour Hotel Fowey. This elegant four-star hotel has one of the best locations in town and is perfectly placed for discovering one of Cornwall’s prettiest coastal destinations. Whether you want to enjoy the local shops and restaurants, explore the coastline, or relax somewhere with beautiful scenery, this hotel makes a memorable base.
Fowey is a picturesque harbour town overlooking an area of outstanding natural beauty, with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and waterside pubs. Coastal walks, beaches, and the countryside are all within easy reach. The town is popular with walkers, food lovers, and those looking for a slower-paced holiday on the Cornish coastline. For dog owners, Fowey is a lovely destination, as they are welcome pretty much everywhere.
Our Unexpected Stay at Harbour Hotel Fowey
Our stay at Harbour Hotel Fowey wasn’t actually planned. We had originally booked the Safe Harbour Inn, but unfortunately they had double-booked our room. I do always champion booking direct, but in this case I’m glad I’d used Booking.com as we could utilise their relocation policy. Being a small place, and being so late in the evening, our choices were limited. But we were offered a stay at Harbour Hotel Fowey in a Superior Sea View Room.
Having visited Fowey several times before, I knew exactly where the hotel was. I was thrilled with the unexpected upgrade, although I also knew it was in a price bracket I wouldn’t consider on a last-minute weekend away.
The hotel was renovated in 2019, so it feels modern, stylish, and very connected to its coastal surroundings. The décor uses lots of blues and whites, reflecting the seaside setting and giving the whole place a fresh, relaxed feel. The views really are the star of the show. Watching boats move along the River Fowey from the hotel is a lovely experience, especially on your balcony in the morning with a coffee.
Staying in a Superior Sea View Room
We were given a Superior Sea View Room, which was incredibly spacious and comfortable.
The highlight was definitely the balcony terrace, though this is small and shared with the rooms alongside you; it was the perfect place to enjoy the first cuppa of the day while looking out over the water. Travelling with Ivan, our rescue dog, it was also a great little space for him to relax. We could leave the door open, put him on his long lead, and let him enjoy sitting in the sunshine.
There was also a complimentary bottle of gin and tonic in the in-room fridge, which was a thoughtful gesture. There was even an ice bucket, which could be filled up at the bar or by room service. However, at this price point, I would have expected this kind of perk to be refreshed daily.
The rooms included everything you would expect from a four-star hotel, including:

- Nespresso coffee machine
- Toiletries
- Bathrobes and slippers
- Hairdryer
- Free WiFi
- Comfortable seating area
- Spacious bathroom with walk-in shower
Would I pay nearly £800 to stay here?
This is where I think it’s important to be honest. The hotel was lovely, and we had a wonderful stay. But would I personally have paid nearly £800 for one night? Probably not.
That’s mainly because of how we travel. When we visit somewhere like Cornwall, we don’t spend much time in our hotel room. We’re usually out exploring, finding dog-friendly pubs, exploring secret corners, walking along the coast, and looking for new places to visit. For that kind of money, I could book three or four weekends away.
However, I fully understand why someone would choose Harbour Hotel Fowey for a special occasion. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or looking for a romantic trip where the hotel itself is part of the experience, it would be a beautiful choice.
For the price, I personally would expect additional facilities such as a gym, spa, swimming pool, or a bath in the room. The walk-in shower was lovely, but a luxury stay at this level would benefit from those extra touches.
Things to know before booking
Because Harbour Hotel Fowey is an older building, there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive. There is no air-conditioning, although a fan was provided in the room. During warmer weather, this may be something to consider.
We also found that the windows couldn’t be opened, which was slightly frustrating. I would have left the balcony door open overnight to get a bit of fresh air. But as there was an option for other guests to walk past (they didn’t, but could), and as Ivan is always primed for an adventure, we didn’t feel comfortable leaving it open.
Fowey Parking
The hotel has limited on-site parking, and there is a daily charge. Reserving a space is recommended, as parking in Fowey can be difficult, mainly during peak season. The Main Long Stay Car Park is a 5-10 minute walk up a steep hill. Readymoney Car Park is smaller and often quieter. It even offers free parking from November to February.
Would I stay again?
Harbour Hotel Fowey is undeniably beautiful. The location is exceptional, the views are incredible, and it’s one of the most picturesque hotels I’ve stayed in.
For anyone wanting to experience one of the most scenic hotels in Cornwall, Harbour Hotel Fowey is a very tempting choice.
Sometimes it’s nice to see how the other half live… even if it’s just for one night!
Harbour Hotel Fowey History
Originally the Fowey Hotel, it has been a landmark in Fowey since 1882. It was built for £5,000 to accommodate the area’s growing tourism, and enlarged in 1891 for an additional £14,000. Today it still retains that classic Victorian architecture. During World War One, it was used as a convalescent home for injured officers and was requisitioned for military use during the Second World War, and acted as one of the launch sites for the D-Day landings. Many famous faces have stayed here, including Daphne du Maurier, Sir Arthur Quiller Couch, and Kenneth Graham.
Harbour Hotel Fowey Restaurant
Harbour Kitchen, Bar & Terrace is much more than somewhere to grab breakfast. Overlooking the estuary, it’s a lovely spot for sunset drinks, or dinner with a view. If the weather allows, I’d highly recommend sitting outside on the terrace with a drink – the views across the River Fowey are just as impressive just like those from the bedrooms.
A lovely touch is the hotel’s water pistols, left for guests dining outside to gently deter the resident seagulls, which definitely raised a smile.
Dogs are allowed in the bar and lounge area, as well as the outdoor terraces and gardens. Unfortunately, dogs can’t go in the main restaurant.
Harbour Hotel Fowey Breakfast
Breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay. On our first morning, I opted for avocado on toast with smoked salmon and perfectly poached eggs, alongside homemade flapjacks from the continental selection, freshly squeezed orange juice and a pot of tea, all enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the water. On our second morning, I treated myself to the Harbour Full English, which was cooked to order using excellent quality ingredients and was every bit as good as I’d hoped.
Other options included eggs benedict or royale, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, sausage and egg brioche, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, or a full breakfast with vegetarian and vegan options.
My only criticism is that the cooked breakfast comes with an additional supplement. Considering the room rates, it feels like something that should be included as standard rather than an extra charge.
Harbour Hotel Fowey Menu
The Harbour Hotel Fowey menu focuses on fresh, seasonal produce with a strong emphasis on Cornish ingredients. Expect dishes such as seafood bouillabaisse, baked Cornish crab thermidor, cod topped with a crab and herb crust, mussels, fillet steak, flat iron chicken, and a selection of vegetarian options.
The set lunch offer is a great price, with two courses for £23.95, and Sunday lunch starts from £28.95 for two courses. To be fair, the main menu prices are in keeping with the rest of the village.
Afternoon Tea Fowey Harbour Hotel
Although we didn’t have the chance to try afternoon tea during our stay, what could be better than an afternoon tea overlooking the estuary? Depending on the time of year, you’ll find delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with Cornish clotted cream and jam, and beautifully presented sweet treats inspired by the season. If the weather is kind, the gardens would make a wonderful setting to enjoy this.
Harbour Hotel Fowey Room Service
If you’d rather make the most of your room, Harbour Hotel Fowey also offers room service, allowing you to enjoy food and drinks without leaving your balcony or sea view. We didn’t use the service ourselves. Hot food is only available for the same hours as the kitchen. There is also a £5 tray charge if you’d like to eat in your room.

Things To Do In Fowey With Your Dog
One of the biggest advantages of staying at the Harbour Hotel Fowey is the location. There are so many things to do in Fowey.
- Visit Polruan, take the ferry to the other side of the bay and wander the ancient streets, and see Polruan Castle.
- Readymoney Cove is a beautiful little beach perfect for a morning stroll and dipping paws in the sea. It does have seasonal restrictions between 10am and 6pm in July and August.
- St Catherine’s Castle was built by King Henry VIII around 1530 and designed to defend Fowey from French invasion: lovely short walk, and free entry.
- Fowey Aquarium was established in 1952 and still retains many original tanks.
- Fowey Museum is open on weekdays from Easter to September and has wonderful collections on the town’s history and links to Daphne du Maurier.

We paid £761 for a two-night, bed-and-breakfast stay (upgrading to a full breakfast, instead of continental) on a Friday and Saturday in July 2026. This cost included the £20 per dog, per night fee, and parking for the two nights. I’m waiting for this to be refunded to me, via the booking.com relocation policy.
