Lytes Cary Manor History
With its origins tracing back to the 13th century, Lytes Cary Manor is not just a pretty facade – it’s a treasure trove of centuries-old tales. Once the residence of the Lyte family, it gained prominence in the 1500s, thanks to Henry Lyte, a botanical genius who translated Niewe Herball, contributing significantly to the spread of plant knowledge in the English-speaking world.
Fast-forward to the early 20th century, the manor was lovingly restored by Sir Walter Jenner – yep, from the same family as smallpox vaccine pioneer Edward Jenner. Sir Walter brought the west wing and gardens back to life with some stylish flair and later gifted the whole lot to the National Trust.
Today, it’s one of the loveliest manor houses in Somerset, with formal gardens, peaceful parkland, and that unbeatable “step-back-in-time” feeling.
Dog Friendly Details
Lytes Cary Manor is a haven for dogs, with most of the grounds and parkland open for exploration on short leads – perfect for a leisurely sniff-around. While a few areas like the Apostle Garden, the manor house, the chapel, and the tea room are off-limits, there’s a dedicated dog tie-up area in the tea-room courtyard with parasols, ensuring your furry friend’s comfort while you take a quick break. And, of course, assistance dogs are welcome everywhere.
Top Tip: Bring a short lead – we were asked to swap our extendable one when we visited.
Staying at the Lytes Cary Manor Accommodation
Want to make it more than just a day trip? You’re in for a treat! The Lytes Cary Manor Holiday Let is a National Trust cottage set in the manor’s gorgeous grounds.
You’ll stay in part of the manor’s west wing, surrounded by peaceful countryside and blooming gardens. Expect wooden beams, flagstone floors, and all the cosy comforts of a countryside cottage. It includes a ground floor living area, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable bedrooms upstairs. It has seven bedrooms and can sleep up to 14 people. (Not dog-friendly)
There’s also 3 Lytes Cary holiday cottage, which is dog-friendly. This semi-detached Victorian stone cottage has its own private garden and a cosy log burner. It sleeps up to 3 in a single bedroom and a double bedroom with views of the estate and countryside beyond.

Events at Lytes Cary Manor Somerset
Alongside guided walks, half-term fun for children, Easter trails and 50 things to do before you’re 11¾, there are regular events at Lytes Cary. The Lytes Cary Manor Craft Fair is monthly from April to October. In December, the Christmas Market is a highlight. Held in the historic barns, market hall and courtyard areas, you can browse crafts inspired by the area – ideal for unique festive gifts.

It’s peaceful, pretty, and packed with stories – and if you stay overnight in the cottage, you’ll truly feel like Lord or Lady of the Manor (dog included).
The Bell at Broadway
We stayed at The Bell at Broadway during our trip to Somerset, and we honestly can’t recommend it enough. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Broadway near Ilminster, this charming 17th-century inn is the kind of place that instantly feels like home – especially if you’ve got a dog in tow.
The staff were incredibly welcoming (Ivan was on first-name terms by the end of the first night!), and the dog-friendly touches were spot on – from paw towels in the room to dogs being allowed in the bar and restaurant. Our double room was spacious and stylish, with a huge comfy bed, a quirky in-room shower, and thoughtful extras like bottled water and a coffee station.
Breakfasts were generous, the evening meals were so good we didn’t bother eating anywhere else, and the laid-back village vibe made for the perfect countryside escape. Whether you’re planning a weekend away or looking for dog friendly hotels in Somerset, The Bell is a fantastic choice.
