We visited with our dog, and it quickly became one of our favourite dog friendly destinations in Wales. Whether you’re here for a day trip or a weekend getaway, there’s plenty of dog friendly fun to be had. So grab the lead, pack a few treats, and explore everything this quirky town offers.
The weather here is generally mild, with cool summers and mild winters, making it an excellent destination for outdoor activities with your furry friend.
Hay-on-Wye Dog Friendly
You don’t have to leave your four-legged friend behind when you visit Hay. In fact, they might enjoy it even more than you do. With riverside walks, historic attractions, and markets to sniff around, Hay-on-Wye is truly dog friendly.
Hay-on-Wye Tourist Information Bureau
Near the main car park, the Tourist Information Office has maps, leaflets, booklets and helpful staff to guide on the best things to do in Hay-on-Wye.
Hay Castle
Right in the heart of town, Hay Castle is a must-see. Dogs are allowed in the reception area and café, though sadly not throughout the main building. Still, it’s worth visiting for the view alone – and your entry ticket lasts the whole year!
River Wye Walks
Follow the River Wye for peaceful strolls and paw-dipping opportunities. There are benches along the way and some great picnic spots. It’s an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you know you’re in for scenic trails.

The Hay Market is a great way to soak up local life. It is held every Thursday and the first Saturday of the month. Dogs are welcome on leads, and there’s always a stall or two offering something for them, like homemade dog biscuits or natural treats.
Hay-on-Wye Distillery
Yes, you read that right. You can enjoy a tasting while your dog lounges beside you. The Hay Distillery is wonderfully dog friendly and a fab spot to grab a bottle of something local to take home.
Hay-on-Wye Book Festival
Every spring, Hay comes alive with the world-famous Hay Festival. The whole town buzzes with authors, creatives, and curious minds. While dogs may not be allowed on the festival site, many outdoor areas, cafés, and bookstalls welcome well-behaved dogs. The festival itself is a celebration of literature and arts, with numerous events, talks, and book signings, making it a must-visit for book lovers.
Hay-on-Wye Dog Friendly Shops
Shopping in Hay is a delight. From unique artisan gifts to vintage clothing, there’s something for everyone around every corner. And the best part? Most independent shops happily welcome dogs – just ask if you’re unsure.
The Old Electric Shop
The Old Electric Shop is part vintage store, part café, and all kinds of quirky. It’s a great spot to pick up a gift or something delightfully odd. Dogs are welcome in the shop and café.
The Pet Shop
An obvious win! Stock up on treats, toys, or even dog coats (it is Wales, after all). The Pet Shop is friendly, well-stocked, and always has a biscuit for visiting customers on four legs.
Baaad Flockers
This wool and knitwear shop wins best name, hands down. The owners of Baaad Flockers are super friendly, and you’ll often find a shop dog curled up near the counter. They’re very happy for visiting dogs to come in for a sniff.
Flow
Selling gorgeous clothing, footwear, toiletries, blankets and throws, all beautifully curated. It is dog friendly. Pop in for a browse and a handmade candle or two.
Hay-on-Wye Dog Friendly Bookshops
Hay is the town of books – and yes, dogs are allowed to join in the action, too. Most bookshops welcome dogs on leads but always ask if you are unsure.
Hay Cinema Bookshop
Hay Cinema Bookshop is an absolute labyrinth of books housed in a converted cinema. It’s cool and atmospheric, and yes, dogs are welcome. The wooden floors and book towers give off serious ‘hidden treasure’ vibes.
Richard Booth’s Bookshop
Possibly the most famous in town. Not only are dogs welcome, but there’s also a café inside (more on that later). At Richard Booth’s Bookshop, you can expect lush chairs, roaring fires in winter, and literary magic all around.
Hay-on-Wye Booksellers
Hay-on-Wye Booksellers is a cosy, independent spot with knowledgeable staff and shelves upon shelves of second-hand books. Dogs are usually welcomed with a smile and a gentle ear scratch.
Hay-on-Wye Dog Friendly Cafes
If you’ve done all that exploring, you’ll need a cuppa and a snack. Luckily, Hay is full of dog-friendly cafés, many with ready water bowls.
The Granary
A welcoming café with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Fabulous cakes and hearty breakfasts, who are happy to welcome your dog while you tuck in. The Granary also do events such as supper clubs and evening set menus.
Shepherds Parlour
This is the place for ice cream – made from sheep’s milk! They also have breakfasts and sandwiches using local ingredients. Shepherds Parlour are more than happy to accommodate dogs inside.
The Cosy Café
It does what it says on the tin. Cosy Cafe is warm and inviting, ideal for a chill-out with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Dogs are welcome!
Café Hay
Based inside Richard Booth’s Bookshop, this café is perfect for a rainy day. Browse the bookshelves, then settle down with a hot drink – and your dog can doze beside you.
Bean Box
The family-run business is in the garden of their beautiful home on the banks of the River Wye. It serves excellent tea and coffee and locally sourced cakes. There are even dog treats on the counter, so they can have a bite with you.
Sandwich Cellar
A tiny gem that’s great for a quick bite. Try their toasties – your dog will be begging for a crumb.
Treehouse Café
Tucked away up a flight of stairs on the riverbank, offering coffee, cake sandwiches, pastries and wood-fired pizza. There’s even a woodland playground for children.
The Globe
Part arts venue, part bar, part café, The Globe is dog friendly inside and out. It’s also a fantastic venue for live music and talks.
The Café at Drover Cycles
Perfect if you’re on a walking or cycling break. The café has space to stash bikes, and dogs are always welcome in the courtyard.

What’s a trip to Hay without a proper pub stop? The Hay on Wye dog friendly pubs are perfect for Sunday roasts, pints by the fire, or a beer garden with a view.
The Old Black Lion
Low beams, crackling fires, and a warm welcome for dogs. You can expect cask ales and excellent food served between 12-2pm and from 6pm daily.
Kilverts
Right on the main street with a large beer garden and comfy interior. Water bowls and treats are often available.
Three Tuns
The Three Tuns is a traditional pub with hearty food and friendly vibes. Dogs are welcome in the bar area. Food is served between 12-3pm and from 6pm.
The Blue Boar
Popular with locals and visitors alike, this historic pub has lots of space for you and your dog and a traditional but exciting menu.
The Swan at Hay Hotel
Dogs are allowed in the bar and garden, which is perfect for a more refined drink or bite to eat. Food is served daily at The Swan between noon and 2.30pm and from 5.30 to 8.30pm. Choose between light bites, afternoon tea and the main menu.
Rose and Crown
A community pub with real ale, games nights, and a relaxed feel. The Rose and Crown is a 16th-century pub showing live sports on five big screens, plus pool and live music on weekends. Dogs will feel right at home.

Found at The Globe, Burger Me is exactly what it says on the tin – burgers, milkshakes, and a relaxed vibe. You’re welcome to eat in with your dog, or the food is also available to takeaway.

You could easily spend your whole holiday in Hay—but there’s even more to explore nearby.
- Ystradfellte – Hike through Ystradfellte, known as waterfall country, for dramatic scenery and refreshing swims.
- Pen y Fan – The highest peak in South Wales. Use your National Trust Membership for free parking and enjoy a rewarding climb.
- Llanthony Priory – Atmospheric ruins of Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the grounds.

How to Get to Hay on Wye
Driving? Park up at Oxford Road Car Park, which is central and easy to find. It’s only £4 for the whole day.
No car? No problem. Take the train to Hereford, the closest train station to Hay-on-Wye, then hop on the T14 Stagecoach bus. It runs Monday–Saturday with five services daily, winding through the lovely countryside before dropping you in town.

If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book as soon as possible. Prices rise the closer you get to the travel date and are usually displayed per room rather than per person. However, there is a vast array of options to accommodate all budgets.
