If your idea of a good time is a scenic ramble, you’re in luck. The parkland surrounding Montacute is vast and varied, full of woodland trails, open fields, and secret paths. We did a circular walk around the edge of the estate – it took just over an hour with lots of stops for sniff breaks (and selfies with the house in the background).
Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife, too. Ivan was fascinated by the squirrels and very interested in the distant bleating of sheep from a neighbouring farm.

After all that walking, we headed to the on-site café for a bite. While dogs aren’t allowed inside, there’s plenty of accessible outdoor seating where you can enjoy your lunch with your pup beside you.
The food? Lovely! Compared to some other sites, there wasn’t a huge selection, but they have sandwiches, sausage rolls and pasties. Plus, the infamous scones and cakes that are definitely big enough to share. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks, too.
Montacute House Accommodation
Loved it so much you don’t want to leave? You’re in luck. Montacute South Lodge is a dreamy holiday cottage on the estate grounds. It sleeps up to 6 guests, has 3 bedrooms, and allows 2 dogs – we’re adding it to our staycation list!
With a small private garden, WiFi, and parking for 2 cars, this charming lodge dates all the way back to the 16th Century, so you can really soak in the history without giving up any modern comforts.

The Bell at Broadway
We stayed at The Bell at Broadway during our trip to Somerset, and we honestly can’t recommend it enough. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Broadway near Ilminster, this charming 17th-century inn is the kind of place that instantly feels like home – especially if you’ve got a dog in tow.
The staff were incredibly welcoming (Ivan was on first-name terms by the end of the first night!), and the dog-friendly touches were spot on – from paw towels in the room to dogs being allowed in the bar and restaurant. Our double room was spacious and stylish, with a huge comfy bed, a quirky in-room shower, and thoughtful extras like bottled water and a coffee station.
Breakfasts were generous, the evening meals were so good we didn’t bother eating elsewhere, and the laid-back village vibe made for the perfect countryside escape. Whether you’re planning a weekend away or looking for dog friendly hotels in Somerset, The Bell is a fantastic choice.
