From walking trails to historic spots and welcoming watering holes, Monmouth is a fantastic location for a day out or weekend stay with your dog. With so much open space and friendly faces, it’s easy to see why dogs love it here.

Explore Monmouth Town Centre

Monmouth Town Centre, with its compact and charming layout, is a stress-free place to explore with your dog. You’ll find a mix of independent shops, cafes, and bakeries with local treats. From quirky bookshops to places packed with artisan food and gifts, the town is ideal for a wander and a spot of shopping. Keep an eye out for the paw-print stickers on shop doors – they mark out which places are pup-approved!

Monnow Bridge

One of Monmouth’s most iconic landmarks, Monnow Gate and Bridge, is the only remaining fortified river bridge in Britain with its gate tower still standing. It’s a fab photo spot, and your pooch will love trotting along as you take in the medieval vibes. The historical significance of this bridge will surely intrigue you. It’s just a short walk from the main high street, making it ideal for a quick sightseeing break during your walk.

Tourist Information Centre

Pop into the Tourist Information Centre for maps, walking routes, event flyers and tips on where else to explore. Dogs are welcome inside – they may even get a fuss and a treat! Don’t forget to sign up for the local newsletter if you’re planning more visits to Monmouthshire.

Shire Hall Museum

Shire Hall Museum is steeped in history – it was once home to Monmouth’s courtrooms. Dogs are welcome on the ground floor, but if you’re visiting with someone else, you can take turns to explore the upper floors. There’s free entry, too! The surrounding square is lively and perfect for people watching. There’s often something going on here too, from live music to a weekly market.

Monmouth Castle

Now more of a picturesque ruin, Monmouth Castle is a lovely place for a relaxed wander with your dog. It’s also the birthplace of Henry V, a fun historical tidbit to share with your pup as you stroll through. It’s located right near the town centre, making it easy to incorporate into a longer walk.

Castle and Regimental Museum

Ok, this one isn’t dog-friendly. But the Castle and Regimental Museum has beautiful grounds and an interesting exterior. There’s free entry, so take turns popping inside as the exhibitions are very interesting, with the regiment dating back to 1539. It covers the Civil War and its role in the wars of the 20th century.

The Nelson Museum & Local History Centre

Admiral Lord Nelson’s connection to Monmouth is celebrated here. Again, dogs aren’t allowed inside, but I’ve included it as a must-visit. The museum is situated near the river, making it an ideal spot to rest before continuing your walking adventure. Just outside, there are benches and grass patches perfect for a water break.

Wye Valley Walk

If your dog loves long walks, the Wye Valley Walk is a must. Running for miles through scenic countryside, it’s part of a nature reserve and boasts some of the most stunning river and woodland views in South East Wales. The beauty of this walk is sure to inspire you and your dog to explore. There are plenty of dog-friendly picnic spots along the way, and the walk can be as long or short as you like.

Don’t Get Caught Short 💩

Tuff Pets Dog Poop Bags are premium, extra thick, and environmentally friendly, providing a reliable and eco-conscious solution for pet waste. These zero-waste, home-compostable poo bags allow pet owners to care for their pets and the planet simultaneously, making walkies so much easier.

Offa’s Dyke National Trail

History, hills and hounds – what more could you want? The 8th-century Offa’s Dyke Path runs along the Welsh-English border, offering incredible panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This route is ideal for more energetic pups (and humans!), with plenty of open space and fresh air.

The Wern

A tranquil escape just outside the town centre, The Wern is a hidden gem. This peaceful, wooded area is perfect for off-lead exploring – just keep an eye out for wildlife. Ideal for a morning or afternoon ramble before heading into town for a well-earned drink and bite to eat.

BookBeat – Soundtrack Your Dog Walks

If you love turning a simple dog walk into a mini adventure, BookBeat is the perfect companion. This audiobook app gives you access to over a million stories – from gripping thrillers to feel-good novels – all ready to stream straight to your phone.

Even better, there’s a 30-day free trial, so you can give it a proper go with no pressure. And if BookBeat isn’t the right fit for you? No problem at all – you can cancel your subscription whenever you like, making it a totally stress-free way to soundtrack your dog walks.

Veddw House Garden

While not all private gardens allow dogs, Veddw House Garden breaks the mould. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome to explore the quirky, contemporary garden design with you. It’s one of the more unusual places to visit in Monmouthshire – expect a blend of nature, art, and topiary with a distinct attitude. It’s open during the summer on the first and third Sunday of the month.

The Kymin

For panoramic views over the Wye Valley and beyond, take a walk up to The Kymin Round House and Stables. This National Trust location allows dogs on leads and has a circular route that’s ideal for a group walk or a solo stroll with your best furry mate. There’s even a picnic area at the top – don’t forget the treats!

A National Trust Membership gives you unlimited access to hundreds of historic houses, beautiful gardens, and stunning nature reserves across the UK. It’s totally worth it if you love days out, discovering hidden gems, and getting free parking at most locations. I love our couples membership; it’s only £13.40 per month, and most locations are dog-friendly.

Raglan Castle

Just a short drive from Monmouth, Raglan Castle is a magnificent ruin where dogs on leads are welcome to explore with you. The grounds are vast and grassy – perfect for a gentle stroll as you take in the turrets, towers and moats. Dogs on leads are welcome in most areas, including the grounds and the ground floor of the castle, but not in the towers or upper floors.

Dog Friendly Pubs Monmouth

After all that walking and sightseeing, it’s time for a well-deserved pit stop. Thankfully, there are plenty of dog friendly pubs in Monmouth where you can kick back with a pint and a plate of something tasty.

  • The Punch House – A relaxed spot in the town centre offering classic pub food and a very dog-welcoming vibe.
  • The Robin Hood Inn – A local favourite where you can enjoy a casual bite or a weekend roast.
  • The Griffin Inn – A chic 17th-century pub that offers craft beer and brunch-style dishes.

Dog Friendly Accommodation in Monmouth

If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book as soon as possible. Prices rise the closer you get to the travel date and are usually displayed per room rather than per person. However, there is a vast array of options to accommodate all budgets, from camping to holiday cottages and hotels.
