Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or planning longer dog friendly days out, Brecon is bursting with charm, history, and tail-wagging adventure. With so many things to do in Wales with a dog, you and your furry friend will be planning your next trip before you’ve even left.

Brecon Town Centre

Start your day with a wander around Brecon town centre, a charming market town with independent shops, cafés, and lots of sniffing for curious pups. You’ll find dog-friendly boutiques and places to stop for a puppuccino. Most local shop owners are happy to give your dog a little fuss (and sometimes a biscuit or two). It’s the perfect pit stop for days out with dogs!

Brecon Castle

Although the remains of Brecon Castle are now part of a hotel, you can still admire the historic stonework from the outside and enjoy a gentle stroll around the foundations. It’s a lovely spot to pause for a photo op with your furry friend and imagine the castle in its medieval glory.

Brecon Market Hall

Brecon’s Market Hall is a buzzing centre for twice‑weekly indoor markets (Tuesdays and Fridays) as well as a popular Farmers & Makers Market each second Saturday of the month. While dogs can’t venture inside the actual trading hall (due to space and hygiene regulations), the arcade of independent shops flanking the market hall is open six days a week. Many shopkeepers warmly welcome well‑behaved pups for some fuss or treats. You’ll find stalls offering local produce, artisan crafts, jewellery, antiques, cakes, clothing, pet beds – even butter churners and more quirky finds.

Brecon Cathedral

You can’t come to Brecon without admiring the stunning Brecon Cathedral. And, dogs are welcome inside the main building and the cathedral grounds. It’s a lovely place for a gentle stroll, a sit-down on a sunny bench with a pot of tea, and a photo with the backdrop of ancient architecture.

Maen-Du Well

Tucked away behind the Cathedral, Maen-Du Well is a peaceful little spot with historic significance. It’s said to be a healing well – no promises, but your dog might feel extra sprightly after a splash here! The path is shaded and quiet, making it ideal for a break from the busier parts of town.

Brecon Canal

The Brecon Canal walk is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. Flat, scenic, and full of views – it’s ideal for all ages (and all paws). Let your pup watch the ducks, sniff the hedgerows, and enjoy a relaxed wander alongside the boats. There are plenty of benches and dog-friendly cafés en route if you fancy a treat.

BookBeat – Soundtrack Your Dog Walks

If you love turning a simple dog walk into a mini adventure, BookBeat is the perfect companion. This audiobook app gives you access to over a million stories – from gripping thrillers to feel-good novels – all ready to stream straight to your phone.

Even better, there’s a 30-day free trial, so you can give it a proper go with no pressure. And if BookBeat isn’t the right fit for you? No problem at all – you can cancel your subscription whenever you like, making it a totally stress-free way to soundtrack your dog walks.

The Gurkha Path

For a slightly more adventurous wander, the Gurkha Path offers a mostly flat circular walk; however, there are sections of rocks and stones that can be slippery when wet. It’s peaceful, off the beaten track, and ideal for dogs who love to explore and sniff. The Nepalese community wanted to express their gratitude to the people of Brecon for their generosity following the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, and the Gurkha Walk was established in response.

The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum

While your pup can’t go inside, the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum is still worth a visit. Located on the outskirts of the town centre, you can admire the building and explore the green space outside. One human can pop in while the other waits with your legged friend. A great option for things to do in mid Wales with dogs when you want a dose of history.

Y Gaer

The Y Gaer Museum, Art Gallery, and Library is a cultural hub featuring an art gallery, museum, and library all under one roof. Dogs aren’t permitted inside, but the grounds are lovely and conveniently located near cafés that allow dogs. It’s a great base to explore more of Brecon’s history – and grab a scone or two.

Peace Garden

Need a quiet moment? Head to the Peace Garden – a hidden gem that’s open to the public and welcomes well-behaved pups. It’s perfect for a bit of mindfulness with your mutt. The flowers change seasonally, and the garden is a relaxing spot after a walk around town.

Off Lead Dog Walks Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons National Park (now known as Bannau Brycheiniog) is a playground for pups. Head up Pen y Fan for a leg-stretching hike with wow-worthy views – remember to keep dogs on a lead around livestock. For off-lead fun, try Mynydd Illtud Common, Talybont Forest, or Craig y Nos Country Park, where your dog can roam, sniff, and splash to their heart’s content. These trails are what things to do in Wales with a dog dreams are made of!

Dog Friendly Pubs in Brecon

There’s no better way to round off a walk than with a pint – and thankfully, Brecon’s pubs are a diverse and welcoming bunch, allowing dogs and often offering water bowls and dog biscuits.

  • The Foundry – a stylish music venue and kitchen serving street food
  • Sarah Siddons – named after the legendary actress born in Brecon. It is a classic pub exuding charm and character.
  • Roukes Drift – is cosy and full of character. A real hit with locals and visitors alike
  • Brecon Tap – boasts an impressive selection of Welsh ales and ciders on tap.
  • The Wellington – one of the town’s most iconic buildings, where you can sit in the bar or the lovely beer garden out back.

Dog Friendly Restaurants Brecon

A family-run burger joint on Hay Road, Hills Brecon, welcomes dogs inside or out. Burgers are on the menu, and there’s even patties for pups! I recommend booking, as we’ve tried to ‘pop in’ on a whim a few times and have been turned away.

Just outside of town along the A470, Tai’r Bull Inn is a welcoming country pub with open fires, cracking mountain views and a dog-friendly attitude – they love dogs!. It’s the kind of place where muddy boots and mucky paws are no problem at all. The food is also exceptional! And, there are free sausages for dogs!

How to Get to Brecon

Driving? The main car park is The Watton, with 220 spaces and EV charging facilities. You can pay and display during the day. It is free after 6pm and on Sundays.

No car? No problem. Take the train to Abergavenny or Merthyr Tydfil, the closest train station to Brecon. In Abergavenny, you can hop on the X43 Stagecoach bus or the T4 from Merthyr. Both run hourly, Monday to Saturday, and operate on a reduced service on Sundays. They don’t operate late into the evening, so be mindful of the last time.

Dog Friendly Hotels Brecon

If you know when you’d like to travel, try to book as soon as possible. Prices rise the closer you get to the travel date and are usually displayed per room rather than per person. However, there is a vast array of options to accommodate all budgets, from camping to holiday cottages and hotels.
