Visiting Newark Park with Your Dog

We love a dog-friendly National Trust day out! If you’re looking for a day out where your four-legged friend is just as welcome as you are, Newark Park in Gloucestershire is a fantastic choice. This charming estate, nestled on the edge of the Cotswolds, is not just a place for a leisurely walk with your dog. It’s a living history, with a rich past, stunning views, and acres of outdoor space that dogs will love exploring.

Why Newark Park is Dog Friendly

From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice how accommodating the team at Newark Park is towards canine visitors. Water bowls are strategically placed throughout the grounds, and waste bins are conveniently located to make life easier for owners. Unlike many historic houses, dogs aren’t restricted to just one or two areas – they’re welcome across most of the estate, including the gardens, woodland trails, and open parkland. Like most National Trust sites, it’s just the house that’s off limits.

During the late Victorian era, the King family at Newark kept several beloved pet dogs, many of which were later laid to rest in the garden, with small headstones marking their final resting place. In more recent history, the final tenants of Newark Park were particularly fond of Great Danes, keeping several of the gentle giants as companions.

Newark Park Walks

One of the real joys of visiting Newark Park with your dog is the sheer variety of walks on offer. From gentle wanders through the formal gardens to longer woodland hikes, there’s something for every pace (and every set of paws). The trails open out onto breathtaking views across the Gloucestershire countryside – the kind of sweeping panoramas that make you want to pause for a photo, if your pup will sit still long enough!

Walking boots are a must because the Newark Park estate was made for rambling. Think shady woodland paths, rolling fields, tucked-away follies, and those iconic views over the Severn Valley. Along the way, you might spot sheep grazing or even catch a glimpse of a deer darting through the trees.

A favourite route is the Newark Park circular walk, a two-mile loop that’s just right for stretching your legs. It winds through bluebell-carpeted woods in spring, passes the tranquil lake, and climbs steadily back towards the house. While it’s not overly demanding, some parts are a bit steep and uneven, so sturdy footwear is definitely recommended. In January and February, the Newark Park Snowdrops are a highlight!

Newark Park History

Once a Tudor hunting lodge (fancy!), Newark Park has stood proudly on the edge of the Cotswolds since the 1500s. It’s seen some serious history – from royal hunts to being transformed into a grand country home. The house’s more recent past is just as fascinating, with an American architect named Robert Parsons buying the estate in the 1970s and injecting it with a unique, eccentric charm. You’ll spot his influence all over the interior of Newark Park – eclectic doesn’t begin to cover it.

Refreshments for Humans and Hounds

After a good walk, you’ll both need refuelling. We loved the little tearoom tucked into the old stable block – full of charm and with a surprisingly decent selection of treats. Seating spills outside so you can enjoy your snack with a side of sunshine and views of the gardens. On our visit, the Newark Park cafe menu featured hearty soups, sausage rolls, pasties, scones and the kind of cakes you pretend you’ll share but absolutely won’t.
