A beautifully restored Tudor manor house with dreamy gardens and plenty of space for your four-legged friend to sniff to their heart’s content. And yes – we’ve been, so here’s our honest review!

Barrington Court is a beautifully restored Tudor manor house managed by the National Trust. Unlike many historic houses, Barrington Court is unfurnished, allowing visitors to fully appreciate its stunning Elizabethan architecture and craftsmanship. The real highlight is the garden – designed in the 1920s by Gertrude Jekyll; it features lush flower borders, orchards, and a walled kitchen garden bursting with seasonal produce. The surrounding parkland offers lovely walks, making it a great day for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

A Bit About Barrington Court
Managed by the National Trust, Barrington House Somerset is a real treat for history buffs, garden lovers, and dog owners alike. Unlike many other heritage sites, this one comes with a twist – Strode House is unfurnished. Yep, you read that right. But that’s actually part of the charm. You can admire the Elizabethan stone craftsmanship, grand fireplaces, and intricate woodwork with no furniture to distract you.
William Clifton began building the house in the 1500s, but Arthur Lyle later rescued it from ruin in the 1920s. He poured his heart (and wallet!) into restoring the house and reviving the gardens – and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
Colonel Lyle was a grandson of the sugar refiner Abram Lyle and director of the company that later merged becoming Tate & Lyle. Having fought in the Boer War at the turn of the century, he later fought in the First World War, where he was injured.
Court House is currently closed for major conservation work. The weather has taken its toll on the roofs, damaging the historic fabric of the buildings. This multi-million-pound project, which is expected to take several years, involves careful planning and restoration to ensure the property’s long-term preservation. While this means that some areas may be closed to visitors, it’s a testament to the National Trust’s commitment to maintaining these historic sites.
Barrington Gardens – Worth the Visit Alone
I’m not being dramatic when I say the gardens are the star of the show. Designed by the iconic Gertrude Jekyll, they’re laid out like a living patchwork quilt. There’s the Lily Garden, the Iris Garden, and a glorious formal garden with geometric lines and bursts of colour. The south lawn is ideal for a bit of a picnic or a pause while your dog rolls around in the grass – we definitely made full use of it for a quick zoomies burst.
Wander a little further, and you’ll find the gorgeous walled kitchen garden filled with seasonal produce that will make your local supermarket look sad. The Barrington Park Estate is surrounded by parkland, too, which is perfect for stretching your pup’s legs with some off-lead exploring (just watch out for sheep!).

Now for the all-important part – is Barrington Court dog-friendly? Absolutely! Dogs are welcome in the gardens and parkland as long as they’re on leads. There are plenty of shady spots and water bowls dotted around, and we even got a few friendly tail wags from other visiting dogs. While they’re not allowed inside the house (understandably), there’s still plenty to enjoy together.
The walks here are lovely – meandering through wildflower meadows and woodlands with views of the north east and west corners of the estate. We took a circular route around the property and even wandered past Strode House, another beautiful building on the estate. It’s the kind of place that’s so peaceful you could easily spend hours just ambling, snacking, and soaking it all in.

Barrington Court is a real gem in the National Trust crown – listed, loved, and full of charm. Whether you’re a history lover, a garden geek, or just looking for a new dog-friendly day out in the Somerset countryside, this one is well worth the visit. It’s the kind of place that feels like a little secret – but one we’re more than happy to share.
So pack some treats (for both you and the dog), lace up your comfiest shoes, and prepare to be charmed by Barrington Court.

There is free entry for National Trust Members and an entrance fee for non-members.

The majority of National Trust sites are dog-friendly. However, entering the buildings can be tricky, as dogs can’t go in them. You can take turns if you go as a couple or a group.

We stayed at The Bell at Broadway during our trip to Somerset, and we honestly can’t recommend it enough. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Broadway near Ilminster, this charming 17th-century inn is the kind of place that instantly feels like home – especially if you’ve got a dog in tow.
The staff were incredibly welcoming (Ivan was on first-name terms by the end of the first night!), and the dog-friendly touches were spot on – from paw towels in the room to dogs being allowed in the bar and restaurant. Our double room was spacious and stylish, with a huge comfy bed, a quirky in-room shower, and thoughtful extras like bottled water and a coffee station.
Breakfasts were generous, the evening meals were so good we didn’t bother eating anywhere else, and the laid-back village vibe made for the perfect countryside escape. Whether you’re planning a weekend away or looking for dog friendly hotels in Somerset, The Bell is a fantastic choice.
