If you’re sniffing out a new dog walk with a dash of history, then St Quentin’s Castle in Cowbridge is a real local secret. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Llanblethian, this 14th century fortress is one of those magical places that make you wonder how it’s not busier. The site may be in remains now, but there’s something about its crumbling walls, ivy-covered stones, and panoramic views across South Wales that makes it feel wonderfully atmospheric – and ideal for four-legged explorers.

A Castle with a Story
Also known as Llanblethian Castle, St Quentin’s dates back to the 1300s, built under the orders of Gilbert de Clare, one of the most powerful barons in medieval Britain. What’s left today hints at how grand it once was, with a dramatic towered gatehouse still standing tall, guarding what remains of the inner courtyard. It’s the kind of historic ruin that makes you pause mid-walk to take it all in.
Unlike some castles where you have to pay or queue, this one’s totally free to explore – perfect if you fancy a spontaneous stroll with your dog and don’t want to fork out for entry fees. Plus, it’s managed by CADW, the Welsh Government’s heritage organisation, which helps protect gems like this for everyone (and every pup) to enjoy.

The Perfect Dog Walk
The grassy paths around the castle are great for dogs – they can scamper, sniff, and pose for photos against those rugged stone walls. The area around the east side is particularly pretty, offering views over the fields and towards the north. Just remember, while there are no restrictions, it’s best to keep your dog on a lead if there are sheep or other walkers nearby.

Once you reach Llanblethian village, follow the brown heritage signs that point to St Quentin’s Castle. If you’re using your phone, search for “St Quentin’s Castle” on your maps app, and it’ll lead you straight there.
There’s limited parking, with 3 to 4 parking spaces. Though we’ve never had an issue getting a space, you may want to aim for an early morning or evening walk. Or head there on a weekday.
