Start your day with a stroll along Plymouth Hoe, the city’s famous seafront promenade. Don’t miss a selfie by Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse! Wander to the Barbican, where you’ll find the Mayflower Steps, pubs, restaurants and a secret garden – The Elizabethan Gardens.
While Plymouth’s central beaches are limited, you’re just a short drive from dog friendly beaches like Wembury, Jennycliff or Bovisand Beach. Perfect for a splash and roll in the sand before heading back to the city.
The Tudor Guest House
We’ve stayed at the Tudor Guest House in Plymouth. Located in a peaceful area, a few short steps from Plymouth Hoe, it’s the perfect base for exploring the main attractions. The guest house features comfortable rooms, a hearty breakfast to start your day, and friendly, attentive service that ensures a pleasant stay. Dogs are welcome, and there’s even a dog friendly breakfast room.
Hope Cove
Look no further than Hope Cove if you’re after a slice of classic seaside charm for short breaks in Devon. Tucked away on the stunning South Devon coast, this pretty fishing village offers gorgeous beaches, cosy pubs, and coastal walks your dog will love. Think sandy paws, salty sea air, and plenty of tail wags!

Salcombe
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Salcombe offers stunning views, sandy beaches, and coastal walks – plus plenty of places where dogs get the VIP (Very Important Pooch) treatment.
North Sands is a popular spot where dogs can run free all year round – perfect for a paddle or a game of fetch. Just around the corner, South Sands allows dogs outside of the peak summer months. And if you fancy an adventure, hop on the ferry to East Portlemouth, where you’ll find quieter beaches like Fisherman’s Cove, Smalls Cove, and Mill Bay, welcoming dogs all year.
Don’t forget to enjoy locally sourced seafood, try Salcombe Gin and head to Salcombe Dairy, where you can try chocolates, truffles, ice cream and sorbets. Many of these establishments are dog-friendly, allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal or treat while your dog relaxes by your side.

Brixham

It’s the ideal place for short breaks in Devon with dogs or a longer seaside escape.
Start your day with a wander around Brixham’s lively harbour. Fishing boats bob in the water, seagulls wheel overhead, and the scent of fresh seafood fills the air. Enjoy Fishcombe Cove, tucked away just outside the harbour, this small pebbly cove has crystal clear waters, so your dog can splash around while you enjoy the view. If your pooch loves a proper romp, head here for miles of sand at low tide. There’s a bit of a walk down, but it’s worth it for the peace and quiet.
For a little slice of history, check out the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s famous ship moored in the harbour. While dogs can’t climb aboard (probably for the best – those planks are tricky), it makes a fun photo opportunity!
Paignton
If you’re after that proper British seaside vibe, Paignton is the place to be! With its sandy beaches, colourful beach huts, and cheery promenade, this classic Devon town is perfect if you’re looking for pet friendly accommodation in Devon. Think paddling in the sea, long walks with views for miles – what’s not to love?
Paignton has several beaches, but dog access varies depending on the time of year. The seafront in Paignton is lively and fun, with an old-school pier offering arcades and seaside snacks (just watch out for sneaky seagulls!) If your dog prefers grass under their paws, head to Young’s Park. It’s excellent for walkies and has a boating lake and a café where dogs are welcome.
One of the best things to do in Paignton is hop aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway, and the great news? Dogs are welcome! You and your pup can chug along the coast and South Devon countryside.
Torquay
With a mix of traditional seaside fun and stunning scenery, Torquay should be at the top of your list! Known as the “English Riviera,” this charming coastal town offers everything you need for a wag-tastic getaway – beaches, miles of coast paths; it’s perfect for dog friendly holidays in Devon by the sea. Wind down afterwards, there are loads of dog friendly places to eat in Torquay, from traditional pubs to harbourside cafés.
A popular walk is from Torquay Harbour to Babbacombe Bay – perfect for blowing away the cobwebs and giving your pup a good workout. Cockington Country Park is a must-visit, just a short trot from the seafront. With over 450 acres of gardens, woodlands, and lakes, it’s a sniff-tastic adventure playground for dogs. The picturesque thatched village of Cockington itself is super cute and full of craft shops and cafés that often welcome furry visitors.
Teignmouth
Teignmouth is one of those charming seaside towns where life moves at a slightly slower pace. Filled with historic Georgian buildings, long sandy beaches, Victorian Pier, and fresh seafood. Cross the river to the quaint village of Shaldon on the passenger ferry (yes, dogs are welcome on board!).
You can enjoy classic British seaside fun without the hustle and bustle, making it perfect for a relaxed Devon break with dogs. Walk along the estuary and watch the boats, then head to a dog-friendly pub (you’ll find plenty).
Cliffden Hotel Teignmouth
The Cliffden Hotel has a rustic charm, comfortable bedrooms, free WiFi, free parking, beautiful gardens with an off-lead paddock for dogs to run around, and a swimming pool. The hotel’s prime location makes exploring the town centre, local cafés, pubs and restaurants easy. Dogs are even welcome in the breakfast room!
Totnes
Say hello to Totnes! This vibrant market town, perched on the banks of the River Dart, is full of charm, character, and plenty of places where your dog is more than welcome. Expect a laid-back, bohemian vibe, colourful streets, and lots of opportunities for walkies, sniffs, and treats.
Totnes is full of independent shops, many of which are dog friendly. Fancy something different? Hop on a dog friendly river cruise from Totnes to Dartmouth! Most of the boats are happy to welcome dogs on board. Stroll along the River Dart, offering miles of gentle walking routes. Walk around Totnes Castle, a great spot to soak up the town’s history and enjoy cracking views. Plus, if you have an English Heritage Membership, you get in FREE.

Dawlish
If your pup loves a seaside stroll followed by a cosy pub lunch, Dawlish is the paw-fect place for your staycation in Devon. This charming town on South Devon’s coast has bags of traditional seaside character, beautiful walks, and plenty of wag-worthy adventures.
You’ll spot Dawlish’s iconic black swans as you wander along the brook through the town, but the beach is where your dog will be itching to get to! Head towards the groynes and let your dog explore the shoreline with the sea breeze in their fur. A few miles down the road, Dawlish Warren is home to a Blue Flag beach and a nature reserve bursting with wildlife. Dogs are allowed on certain parts of the beach year-round.
Dawlish is famous for its seaside railway line. Dogs love watching the trains whizz past, and you can walk alongside the track on the seawall. It’s an easy, flat stroll with plenty to see.
After a long walk, settle into one of Dawlish’s many dog friendly pubs, restaurants or cafés. Grab a cream tea, fish and chips, or other West Country delights.
Exmouth
Exmouth is a port town and seaside resort on the River Exe. It’s one of Devon’s most popular seaside towns, and it’s easy to see why – with two miles of golden sands, a bustling promenade, and loads of dog friendly places to stay.
Exmouth is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, so there are plenty of brilliant walks for you and your pup. Head towards Budleigh Salterton or take in the epic views from Orcombe Point. Expect jaw-dropping scenery and a chance to spot some wildlife along the way.
The marina is great for a relaxed waterside wander. Many of the cafés and pubs here are dog friendly, so you can stop for a coffee or a bite to eat. After a bracing beach walk, tuck into a cream tea or fish and chips while your pup chills out by your side.
National Trust Holidays
National Trust Holidays offers a selection of holiday cottages, campsites and bunkhouses set in spectacular locations. Sleeping 2 – 12 guests, they have everything you need for a night away, from kitchen facilities to cosy gardens to relax in during warmer weather.
Exeter
Exeter is a vibrant city that combines rich history with modern charm, offering plenty to explore for both humans and dogs. Wander through the cobbled streets, visit the stunning Exeter Cathedral, or stroll along the River Exe with your dog by your side.
The city is dog friendly, with plenty of parks, green spaces, and outdoor cafés where your dog can join in the fun. Whether you’re discovering the historic Quayside or enjoying a leisurely walk through Rougemont Gardens, Exeter is a fantastic base for a dog friendly holiday.
Castle Drogo near Exeter
I’ll admit, I was put off by the name Castle Drogo for the longest time – way to Game of Thrones. But I’m so glad we finally visited because it turned out to be a brilliant day out! The castle is beautiful, with striking architecture and loads of interesting history to uncover.
And the grounds? Just stunning. There are lovely walks with plenty of space for the dog to stretch their legs, and it’s really dog friendly too. We had such an enjoyable visit – definitely worth adding to your Devon to-do list! Especially if you have a National Trust Membership.
East Devon
East Devon is a picturesque area boasting rugged coastlines, lush valleys, and quaint countryside. It provides a perfect setting for scenic walks, peaceful beaches, and plenty of outdoor adventures for you and your dog.
Seaton
If you and your pup are craving peace, fresh sea air, and miles of coastal views, Seaton is your perfect spot when looking for dog friendly holiday cottages in Devon.
Seaton Beach is a mile-long, pebbly beach that is dog friendly all year round! It’s perfect for beachcombing, paddling, or just sitting and watching the waves roll in. Seaton is slap bang on the famous South West Coast Path, making it an excellent base for walkies with a view. Head west towards Beer (not the drink, the village!) for a scenic stroll or east towards the stunning Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs, a nature reserve packed with wildlife.
Fancy something a bit different? Hop on the Seaton Tramway, where well-behaved dogs are welcome onboard! You can both enjoy a trundle through the Axe Valley’s wetlands and countryside.
North Devon
North Devon is a captivating region with dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and rolling countryside. It offers miles of coastal walks, charming villages, and unspoiled landscapes to explore.
Lynton & Lynmouth
Lynton and Lynmouth are two picturesque villages nestled on the dramatic coast of North Devon, right on the edge of Exmoor National Park, and they’re a paradise for pups and their people. They are connected by the famous Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, the world’s highest and steepest fully water-powered railway! Well-behaved dogs are welcome onboard.
Take a gentle wander along the harbour in Lynmouth, where fishing boats bob on the water and cafés serve up cream teas, fish and chips and traditional roasts on Sunday. One of the absolute highlights of a visit here is the walk to Watersmeet – an enchanting valley where two rivers meet, surrounded by ancient woodland.
Ilfracombe
The charming seaside town of Ilfracombe is the ideal day trip or staycation destination. With its picturesque harbour and stunning coastal walks, four-legged friends are made to feel welcome. It’s the perfect base for Devon breaks with dogs. There are so many things to do in Ilfracombe with dogs.
While Ilfracombe’s main beach, Wildersmouth Beach, has some seasonal dog restrictions, there are plenty of nearby spots where pups can run free! Hele Bay is just a short walk from town; this pebble and beach is dog-friendly all year round. It’s great for exploring rock pools and playing fetch with driftwood! You can get one of the best cream teas at Hele Corn Mill and Tea Room.
Alongside this, there are plenty of dog friendly pubs in Ilfracombe. Some of our favourites included the Ship & Pilot Inn, The George and Dragon and The Pier Brewery Tap and Grill. We also had an exceptional meal in The Carlton Brasserie, where Ivan was more than welcome. If you’re a foodie, there are so many exciting places to eat in Ilfracombe.
Standing proudly at the entrance to the harbour is Damien Hirst’s Verity Statue, which is a must-see. From here, you can travel along the coast or head out to Lundy Island for an adventure on the waves. Later this year, we’re looking forward to a day trip on the world’s last paddle steamer, The Waverly, from Penarth (near our home in Cardiff) to Ilfracombe.
Dilkhusa Grand Hotel by Compass Hospitality
We stayed at the Dilkhusa Grand Hotel in Ilfracombe, which is in the best location for easy access to the town’s attractions, beaches, and scenic coastal walks. The hotel offers a comfortable stay with its spacious rooms, though the décor leans towards a more rustic style. Despite this, the rooms are well-equipped and quiet. Ivan was truly fussed by the team and loved having so much space in the room.
Barnstaple
Barnstaple is the perfect blend of traditional market town vibes, charming riverside views, and access to some of the best dog-friendly spots in North Devon. Whether you’re strolling along the River Taw, discovering local history, or venturing to the nearby coast.
One of the best ways to explore Barnstaple with your dog is by following the Tarka Trail, a scenic route that follows the path of the River Taw. The trail stretches for miles, so you can either enjoy a short walk or go for a longer adventure. Rock Park is ideal for a leisurely stroll with your dog for a bit of green space right in the town. This well-kept park has wide paths, mature trees, and open lawns where your dog can run around and burn off some energy.
Barnstaple is home to one of the oldest markets in the UK, the Pannier Market. Dogs are allowed inside the market on a lead. If you and your dog love a good adventure, head over to Borough Farm for a taste of rural Devon. The farm offers a chance to see working sheepdogs in action and enjoy walks around the farm’s beautiful grounds.
Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum
We absolutely love our National Trust Membership, and one of the best places we’ve visited so far has been Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum, near Barnstaple.
Like most National Trust sites, dogs were allowed everywhere except the main house and the Old Kitchen Tea Room, but additional indoor seating was next door. We usually take turns inside the house while the other has a coffee. But dogs are allowed in the carriage museum.
A National Trust membership gives you unlimited access to hundreds of historic houses, beautiful gardens, and stunning nature reserves across the UK. It’s totally worth it if you love days out, discovering hidden gems, and getting free parking at most locations. I love our couples membership; it’s only £13.40 per month, and most locations are dog-friendly. It gives us opportunities when on staycation, including parking at beaches or somewhere to stop and stretch our legs whilst driving.
Instow
Instow is a picturesque village with a rich maritime history. Once an important port, it now offers a tranquil escape for visitors looking to enjoy the natural beauty of North Devon.
The village boasts stunning views across the estuary to Appledore. Instow Beach is a favourite for dog walkers thanks to its golden sands and gentle waters. With a mix of charming cottages and a historic railway station on the Tarka Trail, Instow is a wonderful destination to explore. Afterwards, enjoy a drink or a meal in one of the dog friendly pubs in Instow.
Appledore
Appledore is a dreamy little fishing village on the North Devon Coast, where pastel-hued cottages, cobbled streets, and estuary views create the perfect setting for a seaside stroll – with your dog, of course!
Appledore has a rich maritime history and plenty to explore. Once a bustling shipbuilding hub, the village still has strong ties to the sea, and you can learn more about its past at the North Devon Maritime Museum.
Wander through the narrow streets filled with independent shops, galleries, and cafés, or hop on the ferry to Instow for a beach walk with your pup. If you love seafood, don’t miss out on the fresh local catches at pubs and restaurants along the quay! Or enjoy a drink or two in one of the dog friendly pubs in Appledore.
Westward Ho!
If your pup loves a good run on the beach (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), Westward Ho! is going to be their new favourite place. This seaside village near Bideford is about laid-back coastal vibes, miles of sandy shores, and outstanding natural beauty.
Right next door to Westward Ho! is Northam Burrows Country Park, an open expanse of common land perfect for off-lead fun. It’s a fab place for a picnic and a paddle, especially when you want to escape the busier beach.
You’ll find plenty of dog friendly pubs and restaurants. Many cafés and places to eat here have dog bowls, treats, and relaxing spots.
Bideford
If you’re planning a dog friendly holiday in Devon, make sure Bideford is on your list! This historic market town in North Devon is brimming with charm, stunning riverside walks, and easy access to some of the area’s best dog friendly spots.
The Tarka Trail runs right through Bideford and is a must-do for anyone on two legs or four! It’s a flat, traffic-free path that stretches for miles, following the old railway line along the River Torridge. Head to the Bideford Pannier Market if you’re in town on a market day. Dogs are welcome on leads, and it’s a great place to browse local crafts, food, and quirky gifts.
18 Bucklands
Our recent stay at 18 Bucklands, a luxury dog-friendly retreat at Parkdean Bideford Bay Holiday Park, was a unique experience. The refurbished two-bedroom chalet, which can sleep up to 6, feels more like a modern apartment with the luxuries of an upmarket hotel. Every room has been meticulously designed for comfort and relaxation, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable stay. Plus, there’s free parking and free WiFi in a prime location.
Clovelly
Clovelly is utterly charming and was once owned by a Queen of England. It looks untouched by the outside world with winding cobbled streets, whitewashed cottages and unbeatable views. The privately owned village has a small cost to enter – dogs are free – and is steep (fair warning!). Don’t fancy the 20% incline back to the car park? There is a Land Rover service that runs from Easter to October.
At the bottom of the hill, you’ll find Clovelly’s charming harbour. It’s a great spot to sit, take in the view, or watch fishing boats. There’s a small beach where dogs can have a paddle. Afterwards, there are several pubs and tea rooms where dogs are welcome.
We’re looking forward to revisiting in November 2025 and staying at the New Inn Hotel.
West Devon
West Devon is a peaceful and scenic area, offering rolling hills, charming villages, and quiet countryside. There are plenty of trails to explore, historic sites to discover, and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy with your furry friend.
Tavistock
Tavistock is ideal for those looking to unwind, destress, and recharge. Suppose you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore the great outdoors. There’s plenty to do in that case, and foodies will love discovering the town’s culinary gems.
Tavistock is practically on the doorstep of Dartmoor National Park, which means miles of wide-open space for you and your pup to explore. Walk through ancient woodlands, across open moorland, and up to granite tors with outstanding natural beauty.
Alternatively, wander the charming streets of Tavistock, including around the historic Pannier Market. It’s a great spot to pick up local treats. You can also follow the Tavistock Canal towpath – a peaceful, flat walk perfect for paws of all sizes. There are plenty of things to do in Tavistock.
Okehampton
Okehampton should be high on your list if you’re looking for outdoor adventures. Nestled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, it offers a perfect base for short breaks in Devon with dogs, with plenty of walks and historic sites.
Okehampton is the perfect launchpad for exploring the wild and rugged landscapes of Dartmoor National Park. With its vast moorland, craggy tors, and ancient woodlands, Dartmoor is a paradise for dog friendly walks. Head out on one of the many walking trails – whether a gentle stroll through Lydford Gorge or a more challenging hike up Yes Tor.
Take a step back in time with a visit to Okehampton Castle, one of the most picturesque castles in Devon. The site is dog friendly, so your pup can join you as you explore the ruins and take in the sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
